How to Help |
|
We hope you enjoyed all of the photos and information on this web tour of our Sanctuary. We are a licensed Non Profit Organization and your donations are tax deductible. We would greatly appreciate any help, that you can provide to these deserving birds.
We still have birds that, are patiently waiting for their colonies to be built. We have the space, but the funds are not available. Your donations will help us purchase the wire and other supplies needed to complete, these habitats.
There are many pending projects here, at the Cockatoo Rescue and Sanctuary. Within the next few years, we would like to build a greenhouse structure off each colony. The birds will be able to access the warmth of the greenhouse at any time, from a hole in the sidewall of the main colony. This will eliminate the need to bring birds indoors, during the cooler months of November through February. We strongly believe that, the more choices we allow the birds to make about their environment, the happier they will be. We are constantly, reassessing the needs of resident birds. Your donations will permit us to modify their habitats as their needs change.
For your convenience, donations can be made thru Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and E Check, via Pay Pal. For those of you who have not used Pay Pal Services before, they are a division of EBay. Your card numbers and financial information is guaranteed secure, by Pay Pal. There is no membership fee for you to make a Donation thru this service. Just click on the Donate Now button to the left and you will be taken directly to the secure Pay Pal site.

Most Rescue’s and Sanctuaries are hurting financially. The expenses are endless and donation dollars are scarce. Is it that, people do not know how to help? Maybe, they worry about how donation dollars are spent? Are they too busy to donate? Do they worry that small donations will not make a difference? Do they think that, it is someone else’s problem? How do we, as rescues, get the message out, to the public, that we are struggling and could use your help?
There is some good news! There are many, generous pet industry wholesalers who, allow us to purchase a variety of supplies direct, saving us, 1/2 or more, of the normal retail markup! This allows your donation dollars, to go twice as far! Items such as, Pellets, Nuts, Dried Fruits, Beans, and other foods. We are not going to ask for Donations of Retail Gift Certificates. Why should you pay retail with your donation dollars? Unless, you really want to.
There are so many other things that we need, the list is endless. Here are a few of our wish list items:
Heavy Duty Utility Trailer– desperately needed to transport wire rolls, steel roofing panels, pick up large donations, to pick up wood chips for the aviaries, haul logs that are used for the colonies.
Generator– we are on a well, if the power goes out we are without water. Several winter storms this year, have left the entire facility without heat or water. We also lost frozen bird food that could have been saved with a generator.
Plexiglas panels for the Greenhouses– we need 100’s of 4 x 8’ sheets to complete the greenhouse project.
Electric Golf Cart– Is needed to transport food, water and supplies to the colonies around the 40 acre Sanctuary.
Heavy Duty Yard Tractor– to transport heavy supplies, mow, haul wood chips and logs to colonies. Also, needed tiller attachment and trailer. We would like to plant crops of corn and other veggies, for the birds. Our land is pesticide free, organic. We have already planted fruit trees, blueberry and raspberry bushes for the birds to enjoy in the coming years!
Laptop– a laptop would enable us to complete paper work, and log colony notes, outdoors while observing colony activity. We spend an enormous amount of time observing the behavior of each species. All, new birds are monitored closely, to assure their transition into the flock life is successful.
Security Camera’s– We need additional outdoor camera’s to monitor sanctuary residents and grounds.
Dog Run Panels– Dog Run Panels are always needed for emergency housing of confiscated birds. We also use them temporary housing for resident birds that need to be isolated from the colony for treatment, observation, a time out or, for new birds that are slow to adjust to colony life. During the spring and summer, we quarantine new birds in the mini colony/ dog runs.
Heavy Duty Dog Carriers– we can only use carriers that have wire windows. Slat carriers, are not secure enough, to house our Cockatoo’s. We would like to eventually, acquire enough carriers to house all of our residents should there be an emergency. Additionally, these carriers will be made available to loan, to other rescue organizations, and animal control agencies for dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, etc.
Brush Cutter– like the DR Trimmers. We cleared land to build colonies, it seemed as if, the raw land would never fill in. Now, 7 years later, we are pushing the woods back from the colonies. Things are growing too fast. It’s becoming a jungle! We need to keep a clear radius around the colonies to discourage predators. We are clearing by hand, but it is taking hours and hours. Time that should be spent working to improve the colonies is being wasted on yard work and grounds keeping. If you have upgraded your brush cutter, please consider donating your old one to us.
Wells Cargo Trailer– or similar type. We need an enclosed cargo style trailer to transport a large number of live animals, safely and sheltered from the elements. Currently, we can only transport the carriers, that will squeeze into our ONLY Sanctuary vehicle a Jeep.
The Cockatoo Rescue and Sanctuary, is one of the few rescues in the country that, has a facility able to safely house several hundred large birds, in an emergency, with little notice. Because of our unique method, of housing birds in colonies. We all learned, a valuable lesson with the Katrina disaster. We would like to do our part, to prepare for any future disasters, or parrot abuse confiscations. We have the land, and the emergency shelter, all that is left is the food.
If you have any of the above items that you would be willing to donate, please call us at 360 654-1538. We really appreciate your help and support.
